Principal's Message 5/28/10 |
A Note from Kathyby Kathy Foster Parents, friends, and fans of Hart Elementary,
The (Assistant) Principal's Message for the last week of school comes from my desk. Mrs. Foster had the wonderful and much deserved opportunity to spend the day with her two youngest boys at an end of school event. It is really hard to believe that the last week of the school year is upon us, seems like just yesterday that we opened our doors to the 2009-2010 school year.
I have spent some time in reflection in preparation for today's Principal's Message and have decided that I would like to share with you a story. Several weeks ago my oldest child, Austin and I spent the morning at a local tire store to get tires for my mother-in-law. An older lady sat down across from us in the waiting room. I found her quite intriguing, there was just something about her face that "told a story". After a few minutes of sitting in silence she glanced over at my son and said, "My name's Grandma. What's yours?" She repositioned herself in her seat and said, "Austin, I want to tell you something." At this point we were both fully intent on what she was going to say, there was something about her that commanded respect. Grandma said to Austin, "I want you to always remember something; OPPTB." We were both silent, as we weren't quite sure how to respond. She walked us through her life as we sat waiting for the 2 hours it took for our car to be finished. Her story was rich, deep, and inspiring as she had spent her life devoted to building amazing opportunities for youth in the communities that she lived. Grandma shared with Austin and I that the true answer to a rich life was OPPTB. OPPTB is an acronym that Grandma had created that carries with it so much power, as Only Positive People Think Big can be seen in so many places. What makes the time that Grandma spent with Austin and me so important is that she truly taught us a lot. It's not that I didn't recognize that positive thinking was important, I just needed an opportunity to see it in action. It's been quite a while since that warm Saturday morning several weeks ago, and I find myself reflecting on the last week and the week coming and realize that I am surrounded by people who live OPPTB every day. You see, it takes a positive person to plan for engaging lessons during the most hectic time of the year. It takes a positive person to brave the heat and humidity for the best Family Fun Night ever! It takes a positive person to come to school each day to create and share great capstone projects. It takes a positive person to choose to stand up in front of 300+ people and share your talent. It takes a positive person to spend a wonderful morning with kindergartners for a pancake breakfast. It takes a positive person to meet the challenge of reading and writing reviews for 15 books that lead toward earning an invitation to the Bluebonnet blow-out. It takes a positive person to say goodbye to your friends for the summer, and it takes a positive person to end a school year as strong as it was begun. I am a truly lucky person to be surrounded by families, students, and staff that embody the spirit of "Only Positive People Think Big." I wish each of you a wonderful last week of the 2009-2010 school year and encourage you to THINK BIG and have a POSITIVE IMPACT on those around you.
Este video seman nos viene de la clase de espanol Senora Muizers (This weeks video comes to us from Mrs. Muizers' Spanish Class). For the past few weeks the children at Hart have been diligently working on producing their own podcast in Spanish. The children had a choice to collaborate in teams or work individually. They started by choosing the content they would be teaching in Spanish, assigned their work roles and continued with writing their own scripts. It was important for them to rehearse their performance before their final recording while reinforcing their pronunciation and accuracy in as much Spanish that a novice learner has acquired. The most rewarding piece from this project is that the children will be sharing their podcasts with a younger grade. The podcast will be uploaded on to the new iPods that will be used in our Spanish classroom and will be shared by all. In a couple of days our 5th grade students will be making the transition to Middle School and will always be remembered since they are leaving a legacy of learning that will be shared very often and for many years! Click the link below to see an example of one of the videos that the students created.
Yearbooks We have a few yearbooks available for purchase. First come, first served. Send $15 (checks made payable to Hart Elementary) to the Hart office. Yearbooks will be available for pick-up after pre-orders have been distributed.
From The Nurse If your child has medicine at school, please make sure your child has exactly enough medicine to finish the school year. You are responsible for picking up any extra medicine as the school has a policy against sending medicines with students. At the end of this school year, any remaining medicines, including inhalers, that have not been picked up will be thrown out. The school cannot store these for you during the summer. Please remember, if your child is going to continue being medicated at school during the 2010-2011 school year, you will need to have a new medication sheet filled out. Thank you.
